President's Message Thanks to advances in communication and transportation technology, we are now living in a small world. Many organizations now conduct business with little concern for national boundaries. Thus, I believe that the concept of ・globalization' will bring about eternal worldwide peace, by tearing down the dividing walls of nationality. Our institute, Hosei University Research Institute, California (HURIC) is a brand new institution, established August 2000. HURIC is a subsidiary of Hosei University, one of Japan' s major universities, which has a 120-year history and a student body of 20,000. It is an exciting new undertaking for a Japanese University to establish a subsidiary research institute in the U.S. While we are proud of our legacy as a prestigious Japanese university, keeping true to our dream of peace through globalization, we are not bound by our nationality or our tradition. We are an international academic institute accredited in the US as well as in other countries. Our institute aims to have two functions, an educational function and a research function. For the educational function, we are going to provide opportunities for the younger Japanese generation to study in the U.S., and to learn from worldwide experts. Though Japan is a technologically advanced country, it does not often behave as one in the international arena. Therefore we would like to educate Japan's younger generation on how to overcome this weak point, to insure that Japan contributes to the world as a truly advanced country should. These days, Silicon Valley gathers the best people, ideas and resources from all over the world, so it truly is an international place. This makes it an ideal setting for international education and therefore our institute. As for our research function, we intend to conduct international joint research projects, on information technology related topics. We believe that Silicon Valley is a good place for this purpose as well, due to its abundance of intellectual resources. Japan is very skilled in hardware development and mass-production technology, while Silicon Valley is second to none in everything having to do with software. In combining both of these attributes, we expect that our research will derive fruitful results that will benefit people all over the world. I hope that people from around the globe will recognize our institute as an international institution that contributes positively to the world.
Sincerely, Hisato Kobayashi Interim President
